Two Weeks Prior to Surgery

  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, or any blood-thinning medications. Tylenol is allowed.
  • Review your prescriptions with the nurse and be sure you know which to stop before surgery.
  • Arrange transportation, as you cannot drive yourself.
  • Ensure someone stays with you for the first 24 hours at home.
Night Before Surgery
  • Use antibacterial soap (Dial or Hibiclens) the night before and the morning of surgery.
  • Shower thoroughly, paying special attention to the belly button, breast, and underarm areas.
  • IF GOING UNDER ANESTHESIA: Do not eat or drink after midnight.
Morning of Surgery
  • Shower thoroughly, paying specialattention to the belly button, breast, and underarm areas.
  • Avoid using moisturizing soaps orhair conditioner.
  • Do not apply lotion, oil, perfumes, or deodorant.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes.
  • Do not wear makeup, jewelry, or contact lenses.
  • IF GOING UNDER ANESTHESIA: Do not eat or drink.
  • IF HAVING AWAKE SURGERY: Eat a hearty breakfast including solid food and carbs.
Recovery
  • You may have drains; the nurse will teach you drain care before you leave the clinic.
  • Anesthesia may cause nausea, so keep your diet light.
  • Expect bruising and swelling for several weeks. It can take 2-3 months to see the final results.
Activities
  • Consult Dr. Gruber before resuming any physical activity for 4 weeks after surgery.
  • Garments are typically worn for 2weeks. You may remove it to sponge bathe or carefully shower, but keep the bandages dry.
  • Do not apply ice or heating pads to the surgery site.
  • Avoid tub soaks, saunas, or swimming until all incisions are completely healed.
  • Do not drive while taking pain medications as they may cause drowsiness.
